Preservation is the silent driver of value. A card that would grade a 9 today can drop to a 7 after a decade of poor storage — and the market will price that difference harshly.

Start with the right sleeve. Penny sleeves are the minimum, but for anything above common rarity, use a perfect-fit inner sleeve combined with a rigid top-loader. For high-value graded cards, magnetic one-touch holders offer the best balance of protection and display.

Climate is the hidden enemy. Aim for a stable temperature between 18-22°C and relative humidity around 45-50%. Avoid attics, basements, and any wall with direct sunlight. UV exposure fades foils and warps card stock irreversibly.

Finally, use acid-free, PVC-free binder pages for your display collection, and store binders upright — stacking weight damages the cards at the bottom over time.
